Great retrospective, Ken, and thanks too to Artistic Mercenary and SC48 for the buckfifty website and the NYT article.

In my job I have to pay attention to sales trends all over the country, and Denver is indeed much better off than a lot of the places I've been monitoring, especially Phoenix, Las Vegas and South Florida. Oh, and Michigan, which might as well revert to wilderness. We're so lucky, and we've also been blessed by not only a solid class of smart people like Ken, but also some foresighted politicians, including Federico and Wellington (they had their faults, but they set the wheels in motion for the Denver we have today).
--historymystery

Speaking of retrospectives everyone should check out Buckfifty.org for some nice pieces on Denver's history. Including a rather interesting bit on the old viaduct system.

Here's to a great, and vertically rising, 2009!

Now is the time for the City of Denver and DRCOG to take advantage of all the funding about to come from the federal economic stimulus package, and invest in mass transit and pedestrian infrastructure. This will in turn assure investors and developers that Denver will remain open for business through the recession and afterwords.

With the likely slowing of building and change in the downtown corridor for '09, an idea for a column would be identifying the onions and orchids of various lots and properties in and around the downtown area. A top 20 or 50 (if possible) list of each stretched over several columns would keep readership coming back and engaged in a period of time where excitement is not going be as frequent as it has been the last several years.

I definitely think the ball is in Denver's court if you will for a lot of these future projects. We were able to show Denver as a great, vibrant city to millions during the DNC, but that doesn't mean anything if we don't now use that as leverage. Developers should be able to prove lenders that Denver is a great city to invest in, and the city itself should be now able to put in the infrastructure improvements needed to ensure we maintain that sense of specialness and importance as one the the country's top cities.

And then of course it is our responsibility as informed citizens to keep the pressure on our elected officials to not just improve the city for big events, but to make lasting, permanent improvements that will benefit the city for years to come.

I hope 2009 is also the year that Denver gets serious in starting to bring back our street car system. I would also love to see progress in a new, cohesive streetscape for Curtis Street from the DCPA to 20th Street.
