Union Station Update #45

Kiewit crews continue preparation for laying track at the new light rail station and at the temporary Amtrak station.  Here is a pictorial update of both sites.

Also notice in the second photo that additional recycled canopies have been installed at the Amtrak station.  I wonder why the passenger platform (and canopies) bend to the right.  Perhaps, it is necessary to allow space for construction of permanent tracks for commuter rail and other trains behind Union Station.  I’ll get the answer next week.  In the meantime, we can speculate.

The photos above are the only ones that I added this week to our Denver Union Station page at JobSiteVistor.com.  However, I added a few late last week.

ULI – Recharging Colorado on December 9

Mark your calendars! The biggest event of the year for Urban Land Institute-Colorado is this Thursday, December 9. Here’s what’s in store:

The overall theme is “Recharging Colorado”. This Explorer Series event (open to both ULI members and non-members) will take place at the new 1800 Larimer building, Denver’s first LEED-Platinum office tower. The first panel discussion will focus on “The Art of the Deal”… what it took to build 1800 Larimer. Hear from the project team (developer Westfield, architect RNL, contractor Mortenson, and anchor tenant Xcel Energy) about the vision and story behind Denver’s greenest building.

After the first panel, check out the fantastic views from the tower’s 20th floor while exploring the 1800 Larimer Exhibit Hall, where about 20 contractors and vendors who contributed to the city’s most energy-efficient building will feature displays and demonstrations of the technologies that went into the project.

Then, the second panel will focus on “The New Energy Economy and Job Creation” and will begin with a welcome from Governor-Elect John Hickenlooper, followed by an in-depth discussion about the future of Colorado’s green economy by top leaders from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Rocky Mountain Institute, Vestas, and the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation.

After the second panel, head back to the 1800 Larimer Exhibit Hall to enjoy the city lights and a cocktail, and to take a tour of some of the finished tenant spaces at 1800 Larimer. Finally, the event wraps up with ULI-Colorado’s legendary holiday party featuring plenty of food, drink, and music!

For all the details and to register, please visit this page at ULI-Colorado. See you on December 9!

Metro State Student Success Building Groundbreaking

December 3 is the date for the official groundbreaking for Metro State’s new Student Success Building on the Auraria Campus.

The new, 4-story, 145,000 square foot structure will be built at the corner of 9th Street and Auraria Parkway, and will represent the first building in the newly designated Metropolitan State College of Denver “neighborhood” within the larger Auraria Higher Education campus. Here’s a post from about a year ago showing the building’s site and its place within what will become the Metro State quad.

Metro State’s Student Success Building will serve as the home for the college’s new “one-stop-shop” registration center, the First Year Student Success Program, the Community Action Theater, the Center for Innovation, and other critical support, administrative, and student-support services. The $62 million project is being financed through federal stimulus subsidized bonds, backed by a special assessment approved by Metro State students in the Spring 2009.

The new building was designed by RNL Design of Denver. Here are the latest (and final, I believe) renderings of the new building. View is from the 9th Street and Auraria Parkway intersection looking southwest:

The new Student Success Building is scheduled to open April 2012.

Coming soon to DenverInfill… details on Metro State’s new Hospitality Learning Center, scheduled for groundbreaking February 2011.
