Auraria Project Update

Metropolitan State College of Denver, which recently changed its name to Denver State University, is developing two sites; The Metro State Student Success Building and the Hotel Learning Center.

The student success building is making significant progress. This is located at 9th and Auraria Parkway.

They have begun to build the steel skeleton for the building.

The Metro State Student Success Building is going to be a 4-story 145,000 square foot building. It is scheduled to open April 2012. Due to the recent name change of the college, the name of the building may be different upon completion.

Over at the Hotel Learning Center site, it looks like the site is being prepared for construction.

As you can see, there is a red tower crane base at the site.

The Hotel Learning Center will have 150 rooms and over 21,000 square feet of classroom space. It is expected to open September 2012.

Wasn’t UCD supposed to build a new structure after students approved an increase in fee’s? Has anyone heard about progress on that building? If I remember correctly, it was to be built across from the arts/convention center along the south side of Speer. Nice to see new buildings going up at Metro! Dumping those parking lots and increasing student space will only help the school in the long run!
    Thanks!

Patrick, I believe you’re thinking about the proposed Community College of Denver Student Success Building (funded by fee increase approved by CCD students) that was going to go across Speer from the convention center. That project has moved to the parking lot at 9th & Curtis but is otherwise moving forward. I believe construction should begin late this year or in 2012.

It’s nice to see the Auraria campus finally embracing its urban surroundings. Slowly but surely, this sea of parking lots is beginning to fill up. Now if only we could get some private development along the other side of Auraria Parkway. It seems like just the place for some apartments catered to students and people heavy into the sports/entertainment venue scene.

I couldn’t agree more. It would also be cool to see connections/development made from the pepsi center along Market St. to connect to the rebuilt 14th St. entertainment district. Or maybe more feasible, along Chopper cir/Wewetta st to the Union Station HUB.

You make reference to a name change at Metro State. I was not aware that the legislature had taken any action on the Metro State trustees recommendation to change the name of the college. Perhaps I missed it.

    • Ken says:

Larry, you’re right, the legislature still needs to approve the plan; however, I think most people expect the approval will be a formality.

Nice update. The Hotel should be add to the campus/city center connection. Likewise, the UCD Business school at 15th & Lawrence.

What’s happening on the 1/2 block space between Lipan and Mariposa on Colfax? Is that campus related, or DHA, or someone else?
