Podcasts!

Over at DenverUrbanism, we recently launched a collaboration with UrbanDesignPodcast.com, a great podcast run by local urban designer Arina Habich. Once a week or so, Arina features a different podcast about planning, design, and other urban issues in Denver and other locations. DenverUrbanism will be coordinating with UrbanDesignPodcast.com once a quarter to focus on a timely Denver urbanism topic. Our first podcast collaboration with UrbanDesignPodcast was about the Union Station project and featured an interview with Anne Hayes from Union Station Advocates and Bill Mosher from the Denver Union Station Project Authority. You can listen to it here or download it from iTunes here (look for date March 4, 2011). Our next podcast will focus on the 14th Street Initiative and will be uploaded in early June.

Speaking of podcasts, I had the opportunity to be the guest on the Denver Diatribe podcast back in January. The Denver Diatribe, according to producers Joel Warner, Jared Jacang Maher and John Dicker, is a weekly podcast about “culture, politics and stuff as it pertains to Denver, Colorado and its environs.  The show was created in the summer of 2010 to fill a void in the local media landscape between hyper-partisan political talk on commercial radio and the agonizing stodginess of public radio.

For my first (and, hopefully, not last) appearance on the Denver Diatribe, we talked about fun stuff like the Denver mayoral race, FasTracks, and that proposed Walmart in Lakeside. To listen to that particular podcast, click here.

Denver Union Station Update #59

Going, going, gone.  Last week, the structures over the Union Station passenger tunnel were demolished. Here are a couple of photos of the process. By now, all of the debris has been cleaned up and hauled away.

To give you a sense to the extent of backfilling so far, here are two photos taken of the dirt pile on the 16th Street side of the bus terminal. I took the first one on September 7, 2010, and the second on April 15, 2011, both from the same spot on the Millennium Bridge. Also, the other huge pile of dirt on the 17th Street side is virtually gone.  It won’t be long that a casual observer would not know that there is a bus terminal down there.

I took the following photo late in the afternoon today. I intended to crop it to focus on the final beams being installed in the bus terminal roof.  However, once I took a close look at it, I decided to leave it alone since it turned out to be a good shot of the overall construction site.  In addition to the beams, be sure to notice the completed entrance/exit ramp, the skylights, and the progress on building Chestnut Place over the center of the roof.  Also, notice the degree of backfilling all around the site.

Please see our Denver Union Station page at JobSiteVistor.com for 27 more photos that I posted last week, plus the one above so far this week.

Union Station Tour This Saturday, April 16

The forecast for this Saturday morning is sunny and in the 50s, so you know what that means… Union Station walking touring time!

Meet in front of the historic station at 17th & Wynkoop at about 9:50 AM. The tour will begin promptly at 10:00 AM and will conclude around 11:00 AM on the Millennium Bridge. Suggested donation is $10/person and all proceeds go to the non-profit Union Station Advocates. There is a LOT of activity at the Union Station site, as Rick is so expertly documenting. Come see it in person and learn about Downtown’s biggest construction project that will fundamentally transform Denver.

See you Saturday morning!

UPDATE: This weekend is Doors Open Denver and inside Union Station is the DOD event headquarters, so there are going to be a LOT of people in the Union Station area on Saturday morning, taking self-guided and expert-guided tours. To help identify our DenverInfill/Union Station Advocates tour group, meet right at the base of the flagpole at 17th & Wynkoop. Also, in honor of the free Doors Open Denver events this weekend, our DenverInfill/USA Union Station tour this Saturday will also be entirely free (although we probably wouldn’t turn down a donation to USA if you insisted…)!

Denver Union Station Update #58

The project’s most noticeable work is happening right behind Union Station. I took the first photo below March 2, 2011, a mere five weeks ago. I took the second photo on Friday. Gone are all the tracks, passenger platforms, canopies, and bus access to the HOV lane.

Meantime, most of the other work is focused on finishing the entrance/exit ramp for the bus terminal, waterproofing the roof of the terminal, and completing utility work in preparation for rebuilding Chestnut Place. The following two photos, when taken together, give you a wide view of the project. Horizontally through the center of both photos is the beginning of the rebuilt Chestnut Place. On the right side of the first photo, you can see where Kiewit workers have started the dirt foundation for the street across the center of the bus terminal roof. The dark gray stripe on the roof is waterproofing material. In the bottom right quadrant of the second photo, you can see the mall bus turnaround, the inside of which is outlined with a black silt fence. (In spite of how they look in this view, these two photos are not distorted.  They are heavily cropped to focus on the center of activity.)

It appears the concrete work on the bus terminal is nearly finished for now. One section of the roof still needs to be completed as you can see in the lower left quadrant of the second photo above. The floor and the walls of the ramp seem to be done.

In the left center of the second photo above, you can see that walls have been built around the escalator and elevator entrances. The top of the walls, which are about four to five feet high, will be at grade level once backfilling and street construction are complete.

Please see our Denver Union Station page at JobSiteVistor.com for more photos.

Manhattan Phase 2 Update

Back in March Ken made a post about the new Manhattan Phase 2 project going up in the Central Platte Valley.

It may look like dirt was just moved around, but the fences are up and the project is underway.

ManhattanII1

This project will consist of two five-story buildings which will contain 134 rental units. Here is where it is in proximity to the original Manhattan project.

This project is being developed by a Boston-based company: General Investment & Development Companies and is expected to be completed by late summer of 2012.

Upcoming ULI Event on April 14: “Big Building on Campus”

Urban Land Institute-Colorado will be hosting its next Explorer Series event on Thursday afternoon, April 14, that you won’t want to miss!

“Big Building on Campus” will take an in-depth look at all the planned and under-construction development projects at both the Auraria Campus in Denver and the CU campus in Boulder.

The program begins with panelists representing the three institutions at Auraria (CCD, UCD, MSCD) as well as the Auraria Higher Education Center itself, with presentations on all the new and proposed buildings at Auraria. This is followed with a bus trip to Boulder (or you can drive separately) and a walking tour of the CU campus, where several major projects are currently under construction. The event will conclude with a hosted reception in Boulder and the ride back to Denver. Individuals can choose to participate in just the Denver portion, the Boulder portion, or both.

To register for this event and for specific times, locations, fees, and other details, please visit this event’s webpage at the ULI-Colorado website.  This event is open to both ULI-Colorado members and non-members.
