Auraria West Station Update

While Rick’s Union Station updates are found here at DenverInfill, the rest of Denver’s transit news is covered over at DenverUrbanism. So please check out what’s going on with Downtown’s other new under-construction light rail station by clicking here.

Denver Union Station Update #76

No golden spikes, not even a little fanfare for connecting two sets of tracks … at least not yet. I took the following photo at about 4:20 this afternoon (Saturday) as crews were connecting the new light rail tracks with the old tracks near the Millennium Bridge.

Lids are going on new structures.  Roof work has started on the Chestnut Pavilion.  And a round top was placed on the air intake tube for the bus station.

This next item is a bit off topic, but I thought you might enjoy seeing photos of airplane fuselages being shipped by rail.  I took the photo at about 6:30 last evening from my balcony as the train passed by the DUS project.

Next Union Station Tour: August 6

Our next Union Station walking tour will be Saturday, August 6 at 10:00 AM.  I’ll post a reminder a day or two before that date. Have a great weekend!

Denver Union Station Update #75

As the world knows by now, the Central Platte Valley Light Rail Line was shut down last Friday. Today, let’s take a look at what has happened since then. I took the following series of photos at about 9:00 this morning.

The tracks at the light rail station are mostly gone.

The tracks that were embedded in the two-block section of 16th Street are completely gone.

The curved tracks that wrapped around the new DaVita Building at the base of the Millennium Bridge are gone.

Tracks from the new light rail station have been extended southward, under the Millennium Bridge, and are en route to meet up with the old tracks next to the DaVita Building.

Today, I uploaded 19 more photos to our Denver Union Station page at JobSiteVistor.com in addition to the five that I uploaded on Tuesday.

Denver Union Station Update #74

If you are like me and have not been around Union Station lately, there is some cool, new stuff to see. As you know from some comments on recent posts, the three vent tubes are being installed over the top of the bus terminal’s mechanical rooms. Here is a link to Update #62 which explains how fumes will be gathered and vented. One tube is a vent for bus fumes, another is the fresh air intake, and the third is an emergency exhaust for smoke in case of an underground fire.

I took the photos below from my balcony at about 10:00 this morning. You can see that the third vent tube being assembled in the first photo.  The wider shot shows the location of the vent tubes relative to the light rail and mall shuttle stations.  Also in the second photo, you can see that the shuttle loop is completely paved.

I wandered around the construction site late yesterday and was impressed with the heightened level of activity.  Crews are working very hard to meet the critical August 15 deadline to open the new stations.

Look for more updates over the next couple of days.

Today, I uploaded five photos to our Denver Union Station page at JobSiteVistor.com.

Light Rail Changes Coming to Union Station, Auraria West Campus

Over at DenverUrbanism, Ryan recently posted about upcoming light rail service suspension on the CPV line to allow for the switch-over of both the Auraria West Campus and Union Station light rail stations. Please check it out.

Also, I noticed yesterday that they’ve started installing the first of three prefabricated air intake/exhaust stacks next to the new light rail station at Union Station that sort of double as big pieces of public art. When Rick gets back in town in a couple of days, I suspect that will be the focus of Union Station Update #74.
