Perfectly timed for DNC exposure, Sunshine Development has posted a sign announcing their planned 1601 Wewatta project. The project, located on the block bounded by 16th, 17th, Wewatta, and Chestnut in the Union Station district, consists of a mix of hotel, office, and retail space. The rendering on the sign is a preliminary concept design by Shears Adkins architects and their partner, Zimmer Gunsul Frasca; further design refinements and more renderings will be forthcoming.
All I can say at this point is: I like it!
UPDATE: Thanks to the folks at Shears Adkins, here’s a high-res version of the rendering on the sign. Expand/zoom to view at full size:
Looks promising. We need to see more renderings/models!!!!!! I'm kinda confused on the location, though. Is the site currently on a big parking lot?
Yes. It's the block where the temp Gates surface lot is located. Block C5-1 on the Union Station page.
Promising indeed. But it appears that Shears Adkins are only the local architect. ZGF is the design architect.
Sweet! I love the big courtyard thing in the middle. Should be an interesting building.
dergs, you're right. I forgot to add them, so I just did so now.
Did anyone notice the streetcars in the photo – running up 16th avenue? Nice..
Yeah, very nice! Love the courtyard, and the opening. Same on the SW side, you think?
So, this would be the start of the Union Station project?
The "street car" is the existing light rail line. This site is across 16th Street at the point where the LR leaves Union Station, curves west then curves south to go out of the city. (See the Millenium Bridge in the background) Don't plan on this project happening any too quickly. Sunshine Development is a Springs based company with BAD business ethics currently involved in a law suite over their large development in the Springs.
