Here on DenverInfill, I am dedicating this week to the tower crane. Our next crane spotting stop will be at The Confluence: a 34-story 288-unit apartment project going up at the edge of Confluence Park.
To me, tower cranes are beautiful pieces of infrastructure. Today, I could show you the new Confluence crane along with the site it’s sitting on, which is still a hole in the ground, but I decided to take a different perspective: the crane against a beautiful Colorado sunset.
As the sun was setting, three Potain tower cranes in Union Station lit up the sky with their red, green, and blue lights.
More crane action to come. Stay tuned!
Great pics. Thanks for sharing, as always.
Unrelated: what’s going on at i25 & Colorado? I read something several years ago about a possible hotel and an office building and possibly a third apartment building – all several stories tall. This still the plan there?
Here’s the latest on the project at Colorado Blvd & I-25

Thanks!!
In the for what it’s worth category, I believe that at this time next year, there will be 12 active cranes in the Central Platte Valley.
Somewhat related – anybody know what’s up with the redesign of the plaza area across the river from this site? They tore it all down and added the barriers, but have done nothing recently. I walk by there most days at different times of day and there is zero activity. I wondered why it was going to take until fall/winter 2016 to complete (fairly small project that takes up 2 whole warm seasons), but if it just sits like this for lengthy periods of time, I can see why.
Two possible reasons I can think of: 1) high water created dangerous, unworkable conditions. The water has only receded to normal levels in the past two weeks, and 2) maybe the funds are slow to arrive.
At $4.6-5 million, this project is chump change for Denver, and it was planned well in advance correct?. However, I too dislike the lack of constructive activity at this construction site. The massive hole for the Confluence tower isn’t being slowed by any water levels and they even installed their tower crane!
Speaking of tower cranes, does anyone know the number of cranes in the Denver area, both tall and short? Didn’t Denver reach eighteen several years ago?
