It’s been only five weeks since Ryan gave us Update #5 on this project being developed by Continuum Partners, but two new milestones have been reached on this highly visible project on 16th Street next to the Union Station commuter rail platforms.
First, both the 12-story Hotel Born (by Kimpton) and the 5-story companion office building have more-or-less topped out:
Wait, what’s that visible in the second photo? Yes, another milestone: brick!
The hotel’s valet/drop-off drive will be located via Wewatta in the gap between the hotel tower and the 21-story Platform apartments next door:
Let’s wrap up this post with two additional photos because, why not?
Have a great weekend, Denver!
Can anyone explain why the hotel is both concrete and steel? The way they wrapped the latter around the former seems really unusual.
@The Dirt:
The hotel is all post tensioned concrete, but the steel framing in the photo will be part of the auto valet canopy. Much faster to build and saves some cost since there are no guest rooms in that area. Similar design approach to the mechanical penthouse which should be on top soon…
I really wish they had come up with a better solution for the valet/drive. It leaves a big part of the blank wall on the platform visible. It’s really noticeable coming down 16th.
@Nick:
Not sure if this is what you are referring to, but I’ll give it a shot…
There will be 2 pedestrian access ways at train platform level–one cuts between the office Bldg and the hotel directly to 16th street, and the other goes between the hotel and the apartment tower (at the valet location). Finding locations for the valet was a challenge since the parking garage below is shared and needs to be accessed by the hotel valet and patrons, the office workers and the apartment tenants. The city also wouldn’t allow a new vehicular curb cut on 16th street…so there’s that too.
