The SugarSquare project in Lower Downtown is now under construction. Local developer Urban Villages is filling in a narrow 25-foot-wide gap in the 1500 block of Wazee with a 10,800-square foot, four-story office building—technically an addition to the historic Sugar Building—that’s just across the alley from their sharp SugarCube office/residential project completed in 2008. For more information on SugarSquare, check out our announcement post from April 2016.
Site preparation work has been underway for a couple of weeks, but we waited to do this update until real construction had begun. Here was the busy SugarSquare site this afternoon:
This project will go up fairly quickly, so we’ll stop by SugarSquare in a couple of months to bring you another update. Happy weekend, Denver!
Even though this is a small project in comparison to a lot of others, this is one that’s exciting to me.
So what’s the policy on the other building’s windows getting blocked?
Since this building is an addition to the historic Sugar building, in some cases the windows will become doors that connect the new building to the old on each floor. In other cases, the windows will remain windows, perhaps glassless, between sections of the same floor.
still one of my favorite new projects in Denver.
We need to see more of this type of infill.
