Going, going, gone. Last week, the structures over the Union Station passenger tunnel were demolished. Here are a couple of photos of the process. By now, all of the debris has been cleaned up and hauled away.
To give you a sense to the extent of backfilling so far, here are two photos taken of the dirt pile on the 16th Street side of the bus terminal. I took the first one on September 7, 2010, and the second on April 15, 2011, both from the same spot on the Millennium Bridge. Also, the other huge pile of dirt on the 17th Street side is virtually gone. It won’t be long that a casual observer would not know that there is a bus terminal down there.
I took the following photo late in the afternoon today. I intended to crop it to focus on the final beams being installed in the bus terminal roof. However, once I took a close look at it, I decided to leave it alone since it turned out to be a good shot of the overall construction site. In addition to the beams, be sure to notice the completed entrance/exit ramp, the skylights, and the progress on building Chestnut Place over the center of the roof. Also, notice the degree of backfilling all around the site.
Please see our Denver Union Station page at JobSiteVistor.com for 27 more photos that I posted last week, plus the one above so far this week.
Great photos! Please keep them coming.
Just three blocks away, in the new downtown neighborhood of Prospect, the residents lack any restaurants or coffee shops. The closest thing they have to a food vendor is the temporary Amtrack Station building. The latest news for the neighborhood is that a restaurant is being built in the center of Prospect at 29th and Huron called “Tavern Prospect.”
It will be owned and operated by the Tavern Group that has the Tavern Downtown, Uptown, DTC, Lowry, and Littleton.
Here is a link to the Tavern Downtown location. A restaurant/pub like this will really bring some life to this part of Lower Downtown.

Chachafish, thanks for sharing the good news about the Tavern Prospect. If it turns about to be anything like their other locations, it will be a great addition to the nighborhood.
Rick-
Great update…when you said going, going, gone I thought you ment the terminal…as in gone from sight! You make mention of the entrance/exit ramp…is this the only bus access to the terminal?
Thanks again-
Chris
Chris, yeah my going-going-gone comment would probably fit better with the bus terminal. It is truly disappearing from sight.
There will be a second entrance/exit ramp for the bus terminal. It will be immediately behind Union Station and will be built as part of the next phase of the terminal which will probably start this fall. Buses will access the second ramp from 18th Street which will be extended one block between Union Station and Ice House, and will dead-end into the ramp.
