Let’s head on over to an area of Downtown Denver that hasn’t seen any form of development for many years. Over the past two years, we have been following a 21-story 361-room dual-brand hotel project: Hyatt House / Hyatt Place.
The structure has topped out and most of the facade is now complete. The only other element that is missing on the exterior are the logos on the blank walls. Here are some views from the southwest side of the building.
In regards to the blank walls, the one facing 13th street might get covered up in the near future with another hotel project, and the one on 14th street is a great blank canvas for possibly a mural, if allowed.
The 14th Street side is where this project really stands out and has a great street presence. In the corner, a glass facade rises up the entire building length with the street-level enclosed in glass.
Looking southeast on 14th Street towards Colfax, you can clearly see how much of a presence this building has. A pointed roof is always a welcome change on our skyline.
White Lodging is expecting a completion date of around November of this year, which will be the next time we look at this project for a final update.
my god they have too do something with those bulding in the first pic,
I despise the old Meiningers building also. It has been vacant for decades. I would say a parking lot is preferable to an eyesore like this until it gets redeveloped into something better. The new hotel definitely has a tremendous positive presence. While it is a little generic, it looks a lot better than the nearby Aloft and somewhat better than the Embassy Suites. HUGE improvement to that area. I’m excited to see what eventually happens with the old vacant Emily Griffith school along Colfax.
I’m with you. Make it a parking lot as spillover for the Hyatt and the new Cambria
Oh yeh the old art store. Yeah that’s a huge eyesore.
Is the facade EIFS? (Shudders at thought of so much EIFS)
I believe it to be precast.
I looked up Cambria Hotel & Suites to see what might be coming to the south of the Hyatt. During my brief search I couldn’t find one that wasn’t small/short (with the exception of an 18-story version in Manhattan), so I worry that very little of that blank wall will get covered up. Plus the SimCity player in me wants to stick at least one skyscraper south of 14th for the sake of broadening the skyline. Do any of you have an extra few hundred million dollars lying around? Will you stick a skyscraper up in there somewhere please? Thanks!
Hey Freddie, yeh I don’t think this is going to be very tall. Taller than Aloft maybe but not as tall as the Embassy Suites is what I’m foretelling.
Oh I shouldve added this in my first comment, but until the colorado press club and the thai consulate move to different locations, we really won’t have an opportunity to cover up that blank wall.
I don’t think the Cambria would cover up that blank wall anyway. Here is a quote from the BusinessDen article “Both hotel developments will replace surface parking lots and sandwich between them a pair of two-story brick buildings in the middle of the block.” The two-story brick buildings are on the site that would need to be used to truly cover that wall. Does anybody know if they have historic protections? If so, then that wall might not be covered up for a VERY long time.
The Colorado Press Building, which is the southern two-story building on Glenarm, is a Denver Landmark building with demolition restrictions. This would mean that only a very thin building in the place of the northern two-story Colorado Press Association Building could directly block the blank wall of this development (not very likely). It is interesting that this development also has a blank wall facing the three-story Denver Landmark located to the east on 14th (Old Denver Public School Administration Building). I think it has a lot more to do with interior programming (required stairway egress, fire protections, etc.) that these blank walls exist, but not very elegant solutions, however.
Bland and generic looking. Doesn’t add anything interesting to our skyline.
Its a hotel what would you expect….
