Just a few days ago we reported that construction had begun on the 19-story 16 Chestnut project in Downtown Denver’s Union Station district. Monday, East West Partners and Starwood Capital Group announced they have sold the project to Invesco Real Estate. Despite the sale to Invesco, East West Partners will continue to guide the project as developer through the completion of construction.
Thanks to Chris at East West Partners and Alana from VOCA Public Relations, we’re happy to share this very high-resolution new rendering of the tower showing the DaVita logo on the side of the building. This is the view from approximately 16th and Little Raven looking southeast at the Millennium Bridge. The new tower under construction is on the left and DaVita’s existing headquarters building is on the right:
By the way, while construction has been underway for only a few days, there’s already a sizable hole in the ground at the site!
2016-06-21 Edit: Here’s an additional high-resolution rendering courtesy of East West Partners. Thanks, Chris!
Looks like it could be a really cool building but this rendering makes it look like they’ve boxed out the design which is unfortunate, if true. I wish there was a rendering from the other direction. Curious if this building will have the same architectural triangular flare (or whatever you call it) at the top like past renderings have suggested it will. This would surely complement the current DaVita building. That with a possible architectural lighting element (again, like the current DaVita building) would create a pretty cool gateway into the Union Station neighborhood from the west both day and night.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I wonder what it looks like from different angles.
Alan,
It’s a good comment. The design hasn’t been boxed out. It’s a function of the rendering angle. That wall that faces 16th Street runs at an angle. Here’s a link to a rendering that gives you a better sense of the movement of the building. Also, we are working with DaVita to create a lighting program that matches their building and incorporates the new LED lighting on the Millennium Bridge. Great minds, I guess.
Cheers
– Chris
So no one will miss it, I have added the additional rendering Chris mentioned in his comment to the bottom of the main blog post.
Great, thanks!!! Puts a smile on my face seeing they’ve kept the angular design. I feel this will create a pretty cool gateway into Union Station from the west. Looking forward to seeing this site, along with 1709 Chestnut, rise and take shape in the coming year(s). Lots going on right now as we near the end of buildable lots around Union Station. The Coloradan should also break ground in the coming months which will add even more to the Union Station skyline.
Curious as to why the Hilton Garden Inn hasn’t broken ground at 20th & Chestnut. That I recall it was supposed to break ground months ago and nothing has been completed. Hoping the historic building on that site is salvaged. The hotel project was surely going to do that by turning it into a restaurant.
Thanks for providing the additional rendering Chris! I am glad to see it hasn’t changed.
Along with 1709 Chestnut, 16 Chestnut is great placemaking, centralizing the 17th Street spine, tying the light rail station to buses and bikes and Union Station, people cris-crossing from jobs to supermarkets to apartments and condos to hotels and bars and restaurants. A round-the-clock urban beehive. This will be the hottest place in Denver. Great job, Chris!
How much parking will this building have considering it will be right between 6 light rail and commuter rail lines and over 25 bus stops?
I appreciate Chris’ comment. Oklahoma City built Devon Tower a few years back with a great lighting element. It would of course look way different on a much smaller tower, but could make a big statement. Looking at the DaVita Tower and the Millennium Bridge presents a one time opportunity to design something that will be worth while to compliment a very attractive part of our city. The renderings don’t look as though anything pops out to truly complement the designs of the area so far.
Are the renderings final or are we going to use this one time opportunity for a square side with some lighting compliments? What can make this building compliment DaVita and Millennium Bridge and the City of Denver?
I think these renderings are great as-is, apart from one thing: the Da Vita logos on both buildings gives off a weird Tech Center fake city sort of vibe, which is unfortunate. If I could, I’d switch the logo on this building to the opposite site, facing Chestnut Place and looking out over the 16th Street Mall. That way, DaVita could make their headquarters known from all directions, but the view from Commons Park wouldn’t feel quite so corporate branded.
I don’t like the DaVita signs facing toward the park either. They are too prominent and make the publicly owned bridge feel like a corporate plaza. One is bad enough but two is going way overboard. It would be better if the signing the new building was placed on the 16th and Chestnut side.
Why do the need their sign on this building also? One sign is definitely enough.
In the for what it’s worth department, the sign location and design on the new building is the brain child of a rendered in Los Angeles. We still have work to do. But, signage is an important part of any company’s decision to lease space. 🙂
The renderings are all but final. We are making some small changes on the first floor. In the for what it’s worth, I think the two buildings do compliment each other. They have similar elements that reflect each other – the over hangs at the tops of the buildings, the angles to the street, and, ultimately, the lighting. But, as we all know, architecture in the eye of the beholder. We’re hopeful this building will engage well with the street, reflect Davita’s commitment to downtown, and add to an already pretty awesome skyline.
Cheers!
Is that the mayor at bottom right in the second rendering??
