In our Welcome to the New DenverInfill! post two weeks ago, we mentioned that we would soon begin unveiling our Denver Union Station Photo Galleries that will ultimately feature all 1,959 images we took of the big Denver Union Station Transit Center project, from groundbreaking in February 2010 to our final grand opening celebration post in early August 2014. So far we have uploaded the first six of our galleries—February to July 2010—containing 324 images. Check it out!
Of the 54 months that span from February 2010 to August 2014, we have Denver Union Station project photographs for 49 of them. With six months complete, we have only 43 months to go. Yeah, this is going to take a while! Our plan is to launch at least two galleries a week, finishing up sometime in the spring. This gives you yet another excellent reason to visit DenverInfill on a regular basis.
No one covered the monumental Denver Union Station project as extensively as DenverInfill. In addition to our nearly 2,000 photographs, we published 145 posts that documented the project’s construction from beginning to end. To retrieve those post at any time, just go to Projects on the top menu and select Denver Union Station. On each monthly photo gallery page, we’re also providing links to all of the Denver Union Station project posts we published during that month. Handy!
A special THANK YOU goes to Rick Anstey. Rick was our main Denver Union Station contributor for the first two years of the project and was responsible for the overwhelming majority of the posts and photographs during that time. Rick’s clear descriptions of the complex engineering and construction activities visible in his photos helped us all learn a little bit about what goes into a massive infrastructure project like Denver Union Station. Then for the project’s last two years, my blog partner Ryan Dravitz and I shared the reporting and photographing duties. And over at DenverUrbanism, we published over 20 posts on Union Station from different perspectives, including the project’s role in RTD’s expansive FasTracks program.
For many long-time DenverInfill readers, our Denver Union Station Photo Galleries will provide a stroll down memory lane and a chance to reflect on how significantly Union Station has changed in such a short time, transforming from a tired, lifeless building surrounded by ugly parking lots and vacant weedy fields to a bustling, mixed-use transit hub surrounded by engaging public plazas and dense urban development. For our newer DenverInfill readers who count themselves among the thousands of recent arrivals to the Mile High City since the station’s 2014 opening… welcome to Denver! We hope you enjoy discovering through our photo galleries how Union Station became the beautiful vibrant center it is today.
Please check back over the coming months as we upload the balance of our Union Station photo archives and complete the definitive online resource documenting the construction of the Denver Union Station Transit Center.
Union Station is a great addition to Denver. It is a great place to take friends visiting from out of town to visit. No if only RTD could fix all the issues with the trains.
