The Thompson Hotel, at the corner of the 16th Street Mall and Market Street, has recently topped out, reaching its maximum height. Since our last update three months ago, this project quickly shot up six floors.
Let’s start with some views of the Thompson Hotel from the 16th Street Mall. Complemented by Market Station, this entire block of the Mall, between Market and Blake Street, is now completely filled in. When looking back at this Street View from 2008, it’s amazing to see how much this block has transformed over the past decade.
Moving along, here are a few more close-ups of the hotel. Facade work has begun but is currently covered up under the scaffolding.
With Market Station next door, Market Street, between the 16th Street Mall and 17th Street, is now filled in on both sides.
It will be really exciting to see this part of the 16th Street Mall breathe a new life once these projects are complete. The 214-room hotel should wrap up construction by mid next year.
That big blank wall along 16th from Larimer Place condos is such a tragedy and waste of real estate. How in the world did that ever get approved? At least put a mural on it or something.
A quick google search tells me that Larimer Place Condos was completed in 1981 and the 16th Street Mall opened in 1982. If only there had been an ounce of foresight.
Yeah, I agree. That entire base of Larimar Place Condos should be bulldozed and replaced with something that has some type of street life. On the other hand, those streetscapes in these photos are really stunning.
I’ve lived in Denver for a long time. There were people who objected to building that blank wall along what would be the 16th Street Mall when this building was going through the approval process. At the time, as reported in the Rocky Mountain News, the city was very anxious to get something built there, so the the building was approved despite the objections to the blank wall.
Thanks for the additional insight!
AWSOME
The New Thompson Hotel on 16th and market st is a great improvement to that area. Great infill
Next project I would like to see is the redevelopment of 1500 Champa st
Currently the Social Security Administration office.
Great to see a new modern office tower built on that block would look good with the other new projects on 15tth st.
I’m pretty sure that lot was a parking lot at least since I have been here in 1983. Was it another one of those old buildings that got razed in the 1960s? I am glad the parking is gone.
