With yesterday’s removal of all the fencing and scaffolding and sidewalk barriers, the exterior restoration of the building formerly known as Fontius (now the Sage Building) has been fully revealed and declared complete! Developer Evan Makovsky promised that the exterior rehab of the long-blighted building at 16th and Welton would be finished in time for the DNC. Thank you Shames-Makovsky, klipp architects, and Milender White Construction, for a job well done. Here are a couple of photos of the completed exterior, courtesy of Renee at Shames-Makovsky:
Here’s a nice surprise: Have you noticed the new stairway leading from the Welton sidewalk down into the basement? Makovsky has the underground space planned for a trendy bar–glass steps even:
Finally, the building has been nicely outfitted with exterior lighting. I can’t wait to see the Sage shine at night:
What a great day for Downtown Denver! Scratch Fontius from the list…
When will the interior finish?
Beautiful building! I knew she had it in her! Hey, how about a side-by-side before and after comparison? Not that I want to be reminded of the Fontius but I think that'd be cool to see.
artistic… good idea for the comparison. I'll work on that.
andy… I think over the next six months or so for Sage Hospitality to move in. The bank probably sooner. I'm not sure if they've leased all of the GF retail yet.
Woo-hoo! Bravo! Clap, clap, clap…
Sage, though? Is it SOP to call a building after its current occupant? I kind of like calling it the Steele Building, myself. 'Course, I still call the stadium Mile High…
Oh, glass steps won't ever make a bar "trendy," they just make you slip all over the place when they get covered in spilled beer.
But I'm glad they'll put a bar there. It would be cool to see the 16th Street Mall become a big bar hop the way Pearl Street is a bar hop in Boulder. I'm not sure how many bars are already on it, but my impression is that the young people go out to different parts of Denver on Saturday nights.
Looks great. Any idea of who will be occupying the building?
Steele/Sage down. Now it's time for Colorado Building (16th and California) to be renovated. I grimace every time I see how that structure is deteriorating…..
But a toast to Evan and his commitment to downtown and to Denver.
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Looks great! Now let's get some destination retail in there…
those stairs are SWEET! I hope they dont have to put ugly strips of that sandpaper-stuff so that people dont slip.
This is truly magnificent, and let's get going on the Colorado Building campaign!
Who wants to bet against me when I say the 16th and Champa building won't be done by the DNC? Anybody?
Wow, Magnificent I like the shots of your photos its really beautiful and your article is really interesting. Thank you and keep up the good work.
